The first meeting for monitoring and coordination in Trento let BIO-EN-AREA partners analyse the current situation of the project. Several issues regarding sub-projects call of proposals and evaluation procedures were discussed to a final agreement.
The final selection of sub-projects will be made by the Steering Committee members during the meeting that will be held in Sweden in November.
During the second day of the meeting, the partners from Trento showed some of the bioenergy experiences in the region through 3 interesting visits:
1. Visit to the Research Institute "Fondazione Edmund Mach"
The “Istituto Agrario San Michele Fondazione Edmund Mach” promotes and carries out research, scientific experiments, education and training activities as well as providing technical assistance and services to companies of the territory of the Province of Trento.
These activities are aimed at promoting cultural and socio-economic growth in the agricultural sector and at developing the forestry and agro-alimentary systems, with particular regard for the environment and the safeguard of the territory of the Trentino Province.
The Research and Innovation Centre has the mission to promote and enhance the Trentino land-based economy through studies and innovation that improve agricultural and forestry products. The Research Institute is particularly active in the biomass sector and carries on different experimental projects, pilot plants, including international cooperation context projects.
2. Visit to the biomass district heating plant of Cavalese
The district heating plant of Cavalese serves about 500 families, many companies, offices, supermarkets, schools, hotels and the local hospital. The district heating plant uses as fuel forestry biomass of the Val di Fiemme: the clippings of wood gathering processed by the local sawmills to produce wood chips, are stocked in an area of 31.500 cubic meters. The plant consists of two biomass boilers with nominal power of 4 MW and of two emergency natural gas boilers with nominal power of 5,3 MW and 4 MW. The lenght of the road distribution is 22 km and the network serves 510 users, representing 83% of the population.
3. Visit to the Sawmill of Ziano di Fiemme
The Magnifica Comunità della Valle di Fiemme is a very old institution, founded in 1111 AD. The Community protects and enhances the environmental and cultural heritage of the Fiemme Valley and deals with the management of collective property: mountains, forests and pastures. It programmes timber cutting and reforestation and it owns a sawmill with an area of 50.000 square meters. In the sawmill the wood is processed in different stages, that provide different kind of products: high quality wood boards, ware of inferior quality, for the production of finger boards in order to eliminate material defects ( knots, splits etc.) and woodchips for biomass district heating plants of the Valley. In 1997 the Magnifica Comunità della Valle di Fiemme has been certified FSC (Forest Steeardship Council ac) for the entire production cycle: from forest to processing and marketing of wood gathering.
