Description of the practice:
The Magnifica Comunità della Valle di Fiemme is a very old institution, founded in 1111 AD. The Community protects and enhances the environmental and cultural heritage of the Fiemme Valley and deals with the management of collective property: mountains, forests and pastures. It programmes timber cutting and reforestation and it owns a sawmill with an area of 50.000 square meters. In the sawmill the wood is processed in different stages, that provide different kind of products: high quality wood boards, ware of inferior quality, for the production of finger boards; in order to eliminate material defects ( knots, splits etc.) and woodchips for biomass district heating plants of the Valley. The sawmill exploits local resources in a sustainable way, creating a successful market and making profitable all the productive cycle components, from raw materials to waste. In this case, the scraps from wood processing are not considered as waste, but an important bioenergy resource. Leveraging the woodchips produced by the local sawmill, it is ensured to the biomass district heating plant of the Fiemme Valley a short supply chain, with an environmental, social and economical positive impact (less pollution and weaker impact on the local transportation system, more jobs and creation of a new market for the sawmill waste).
