Precise theme tackled by the practice:
Installations of a plant to produce pellets using forest biomass in a central tree nursery
Objectives of the practice:
To know a tree nursery whose purpose is produce plant material for reforestation as well as to preserve and improve forest genetics, and has a pellet plant, and a biomass boiler.
Location
Country:
Spain
Region or District or Metropolitan Area or Municipality:
Castilla y León - Valladolid
Detailed description of the practice
Description of the practice:
The CTN was founded in 1904 and the installations have been renovated and nowadays the building includes a nursery, a dryer, a regional seeds bank and a laboratory to study seeds, in vitro testing and solid biofuels. In the last few years, a pellet plant has been installed. The plant has a capacity to produce 12.000 t of pellets per year, using raw material such as open cones, pine and oak residues from forest works, or wood stumps from different species. The production is used at the nursery itself and other public facilities from Castilla y León regional government. As a complement there is a biomass boiler of 1.000 kWt, fed by cone pine and wood chips to cover the thermal necessities in CTN processes (cone drying), heat and domestic hot water in the building.
Evaluation
Possible demonstrated results:
The installed production capacity amounts to 25,000 tonnes of wood chips and 12,000 tonnes of pellets per annum. The benefits of this plant are specified in the equivalent of 9,000 tonnes of diesel fuel, the annual reduction of 20,250 tonnes of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere and the realisation of preventive fire silvicultural treatments on more than 2,250 hectares of forests
