Precise theme tackled by the practice:
Replacing single oil boilers with district heating using biofuels.
Objectives of the practice:
To supply heat to approximately 1400 of the 2000 inhabitants in Lagan, Sweden, using biomass district heating.
Location
Country:
Sweden
Region or District or Metropolitan Area or Municipality:
Region of Kronoberg, municipality of Ljungby
Detailed description of the practice
Description of the practice:
E.ON has built and is running a district heating network since 2000 on request of the local authority of Ljungby to provide local apartment buildings in Lagan with heat. The population in Lagan is approximately 2000 persons of which 70 % uses the district heating network. Also the municipal buildings, school, nursing home as well as industries are connected. In total, the plant has approximately 220 customers, thereof 170-180 single family houses. Many of the single family house owners changed from their 15-20 year old oil boilers when the district heating plant in Lagan was built. This was both environmentally and economically sound. The production unit is a 2 MW biomass moving grate boiler for wood chips and briquettes and a 500 kW pellet boiler for back-up and low load. An oil boiler is also available as back-up. The wood chips are processed locally and E.ON’s 2 staff manages this and five similar systems remotely and with visits approximately once a day. The plant delivers approximately 11.2 GWh of heat per year.
Evaluation
Possible demonstrated results:
Small scale district heating with biofuels.
Possible success factors:
The project was initiated on request from the local authority which also guaranteed the connection of municipal buildings, school, nursing home and apartment buildings.
Lessons learnt from the practice:
It is possible to change from individual oil boilers in single family houses to a district heating network based on biofuels.
