Precise theme tackled by the practice:
Heating for houses, industries and schools in the town of Rottne. The heat is produced from local biofuels.
Objectives of the practice:
The objective with this best practice is to provide environmentally friendly energy for heating, produced from local forest residues. It is also important that the pricing of the heat is competitive compared to fossil oil. The district heating network was established in January 1998 and consisted of a 1,5 MW boiler for biofuels with a 3 MW oil burner as backup. In 2004 another boiler for biofuels with the power of 1,5 MW was installed and the old boiler was rebuilt to be able to handle fuels with higher moisture content. Now the plant is fired with woodchips with a moisture content of 30-50%. The plant is normally operated from Växjo; via a remote monitoring system. The main stakeholders are VEAB, municipality owned ESCO and local house owners, factories and other that buy heat from the dh-network. There are 166 costumers connected to the dh-network and the amount of woodchips used is about 16 000 m3/year.

Detailed description of the practice
Description of the practice:
In the district heating plants owned by VEAB 95% of the fuel used are biofuels. Fossil oil is only used for peak load. The reduction of CO2 emissions from 1993 to 2008 was 35% in the municipality of Växjö, and this is mainly caused by the expansion of district heating and cooling produced from biofuels. In Rottne the production is about 11,5 GWh of heat yearly and this is equal to a replacement of 1300 m3 of fossil oil.
