Description of the practice:
In Södra Ljunga, a few kilometers south of Ljungy in Småland, Sweden, a nearby heating plant and network owned and operated by farmers and forest owners is located. The idea was born in 2006 when different ways of making the village more attractive for people to move to were discussed during a meeting. The local school were threatened to be closed and the different ways of making the village more popular to live in was discussed. The idea of a local nearby heating network was born. The owners received consultative guidance from the federation of Swedish farmers, as well as from the Energy Agency for Southeast Sweden, and shortly thereafter they decided to build a nearby heating plant fuelled with wood chips and wood pellets. The owners implemented the plant from scratch to final installation, and today they are both energy supplier and operator. There are two boilers fired with wood chips and wood pellets respectively. The wood chips for the plant comes from the forests that surround the village and the owners are currently supplying all the woodchips themselves. The customers are four single family houses, one house with 6 apartments, the church, and the school. The implementation of the nearby heating system replaced in total approximately 60 m3 of oil/year for heating purposes. In 2010 they sold a total of 600 MWh heat.
